Hull Hockey Tryout with Confidence

It is finally time to head into tryouts with confidence!

...TRYOUTS...

What do you feel when you see or hear that word?

Nervous?

Scared?

Anxious?

Helpless?

If you feel any of the above, then read below...

We all want to feel excited.

But the reality is...

Tryouts are extremely difficult for everyone, and even heartbreaking for some.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP!

Join Hull Hockey for an informative presentation that takes an unbiased, judgement-free look at the tryout process, along with how to best manage the process as a whole.

With 12 years of experience running tryouts, our goal is simple: to help educate parents and athletes to better understand how tryouts work and how to navigate the process with confidence and clarity. Each year we see the same challenge…a lack of reliable information and practical resources surrounding tryouts. That knowledge gap often leads to confusion, uncertainty, and unnecessary frustration for many involved. This presentation is designed to provide clear insights, answer common questions and share best practices so you can approach tryouts feeling informed, prepared, and confident.

Tryouts. The best/worst time of the year - for EVRYONE.

What's the reason for this?

Tryouts are sort of a big deal, for quite literally everyone involved. As we’ve shared before there continues to be a lack of reliable information and educational resources surrounding hockey tryouts and team placement.

As a completely neutral hockey development program, we’re approached every year with questions about nearly every aspect of the tryout process including how evaluations are conducted, how teams are selected, what coaches are looking for, what realistic expectations should be, and much more.

The number of conversations we have each season made one thing clear: there is a real need for objective, educational guidance. Our goal is to help the hockey community better understand the tryout process, reduce uncertainty, and empower families with knowledge they need to approach tryouts with confidence.

Who is this presentation for?

It is for anyone looking to better understand the tryout process, whether you’re a player, parent, or both.

Maybe you have a 2017 birth year player making the jump from 8U to 10U and you have a long list of questions. Or perhaps your family has been through tryouts before and found the experience confusing, stressful, or disappointing. If you’re looking to better understand how team placements work, what to expect, and how to approach the process with realistic expectations and confidence, this is for you!

No matter where you are in your hockey journey, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of the tryout process and practical insights to help you navigate it more effectively.

What exact information will be presented?

This presentation is designed to be completely unbiased, educational, and judgement-free. Our purpose is not to criticize or evaluate any individual, coach, or hockey program. Every organization has its own philosophy, procedures, and approach to conducting tryouts.

Instead, our goal is to provide a clear understanding of the tryout process so players and families can navigate it with greater confidence and realistic expectations. During the presentation, we’ll cover:

  • How the typical tryout process works from start to finish.
  • How teams are generally selected
  • The key factors coaches and evaluators consider during player evaluations.
  • How to set healthy, realistic expectations before and during tryouts.
  • How to effectively manage both the process and the outcome, regardless of the result.

Perform Under Pressure

Our very own mental performance coach will be speaking.

For many young athletes, tryouts are one of the most mentally demanding experiences they’ll face all season. The pressure to perform, fear of making mistakes, and uncertainty surrounding team selections can create stress that impacts confidence and performance. Learning how to manage these moments is just as important as developing skating, shooting, or hockey IQ.

That’s why this year we’ve made a significant investment in one of the most important, often overlooked, aspects of athlete development by adding a dedicated Mental Performance Coach to our summer academy.

While skating, skill development, and physical training are essential, an athlete’s mindset is often what separates good performances from great ones. Mental performance training helps athletes manage pressure, stay confident, recover from mistakes, and consistently perform at their best when it matters most.

Our very own mental performance coach will discuss how our athletes and parents can walk into tryouts with a more prepared mindset ready to tackle any outcome.
